Without Warning
Picture a bright sunny morning on July 12, 2024, in Pierce County, Washington. With no known cause, a fire sparked in a debris pile at a local recycling plant. This small spark grew to a significant fire which produced toxic fumes that permeated the air in the surrounding area. Citizens were urged to stay clear of fire crews and were strongly advised to shelter-in-place. It was late that afternoon by the time the blaze was under control, but fire crews were still monitoring hot spots. Luckily, no injuries were reported in this incident. However, there could have been, if the local authorities had not been trained and prepared to respond to situations like this, and protected the nearby residents.
Community Involvement
As a manager or safety professional for your company, how engaged are you with your community? There are many companies that give back to their communities through local internships, educational programs and grants, or college scholarships. So how does your company give back?
We partner with area companies to provide the Wally Wise Guy Shelter-in-Place Program. As a safety training company, we work with the schools to teach the local students how to shelter-in-place if there is a chemical release; an event that could be a threat to their environment. We have several interactive programs that involve the kids and their parents; meaning we can reach the community you work in--just in case! Wally knows when to shelter and he goes in his turtle home -- perfect for our kids to understand!
Plan Ahead
Depending on what chemicals are used, the EPA requires you to develop a Risk Management Plan (RMP). This plan provides invaluable information to local fire, police and emergency services personnel about the chemicals they will encounter. These plans can be used in conjunction with a sound community Shelter-in-Place program and can help create an effective public communication and awareness program to improve accident prevention and emergency response practices at the local level.
We're dedicated to keeping your employees and the communities they live and work in safe. Let us know if you want to talk further to create a SAFE(R) Community for you, your friends and family.
